Fiber Monday - Frugality

First off, I finished the project that has been on my loom for a few months. 


This came about because I had leftover warp and weft from another project and I wanted to use them up. There was a pattern that I had been wanting to try, so this seemed like a good time to do it. I pretty much measured out a four foot warp of the silk until I ran out. It ended up being about 8 inches wide. My plan for this is to use it as fabric and put it and some denim I have together to make a casual jacket. 


It's pretty long. I will probably end up cutting it in half and hand sewing the selvedges together to make a slightly wider piece of fabric to work with. I'll need to figure out how it best makes sense with the pattern I'm using. 


This was my loom waste.


It's a six-ply 100% silk and is buttery soft. I've discovered that it makes as excellent embroidery floss because you can separate it as you can DMC floss. I was going to save it anyway because of that. But I realized that it's silk, so I could dye it with the dyes I have. Then I could end up with a wide variety of colors. I'll just throw some into the dye pot whenever I'm dyeing something. 

And then I started in on a new project. I've been wanting to weave some dish towels to have on hand for when I need a gift. I also want to sell handwoven dinner napkins at the Holiday market in December. It would be good to start weaving some sooner rather than later. The warp I started measuring out this afternoon will begin to take care of both those things. Plus, I'm using yarn from my stash that I have in a variety of colors and amounts. So I'm doing a colorful striped warp. 


Here is the first chain.


The weft is going to be a dark navy. I'm kind of excited to see how it will turn out.

Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway

Sew, Mama, Sew! is hosting another giveaway day , the day where many bloggers giveaway things they have made or supplies to make things or both.  It is great fun to visit a lot of blogs and try to win cool stuff.  So fun that I thought I would participate this year. I had great hopes of making a set of coordinating mother/daughter aprons.  But reality reared its ugly head and I came to terms with the fact that my time is not limitless.Instead of aprons,  I must continue to spend quality time with yards and yards of red plaid flannel.  What am I making?  Well, as I tell my children, it is the season not to ask questions... A little adoption history and pontificating

A little distance is always good before writing on a tough subject. I think I can tackle this rationally now, though I may step on a few toes. We'll see. As some of you may know, yesterday the State department issued a notice saying that China, as of the end of August, has closed their intercountry adoption program. This is across the board and regardless of whether a family has been matched with a child or not. This has been exceedingly hard news for the Chinese adoption community.  I think I need to fill you in on some background before I continue because I realize not everyone lives in this world. (This is an extremely cursory and very simplified history.) China began allowing intercounty adoptions in 1992.
