Weekly update - March 2, 2023
There are lots of little odds and ends I want to share, so I guess it's time for a (not so) weekly update.
- Why can't horses need vets during the day on a weekday? Is it really too much to ask? Clearly it is. While I like my vets, I've seen just a little too much of them recently. Tonight at dinner time, it was Buddy I was calling the off-hours emergency number about. He was acting odd and looked uncomfortable. After our bout of impaction colic in January, I decided it wasn't worth waiting for the morning. I was glad I did because this is impaction colic number two for the year. Because we caught it early, I'm hoping that he won't require anymore mineral oil treatments. I may never get ahead on my vet bill.
- I am finishing the last Sheep and Fiber class on Tuesday. These have been really well received. We visit the sheep and learn a bit about them, and then we have a whirlwind fiber tour and I teach everyone how to spin on a spindle. If I get a group of three, I can run the class. Send me a message if you're interested. See the above item regarding vet bills.
- Since I mentioned sheep, I have found someone to come and sheer them. The big event is at the end of the month.
- P. and A. Have spent the last four days visiting my mom. Look what P. pulled out of her bag when she got home.
Some of the very first orange blossoms of one of my mom's orange trees! Orange blossoms are my very favorite scent.
- Y. turned 18 a week ago and we'll be celebrating most of the Feb./March birthdays next week, but last night we had her chosen birthday dinner. Apple pie was her dessert of choice and I only needed one because there are so few of us at home. Did you know that making just one pie is really, really easy? I can't think the last time I made just one. We may be having more pies in the future because it's so easy to do.
- I finally got the dining room table changed to something a bit more spring-like.
- I think I estimated the amount of hot chocolate we needed to get through winter pretty darn well. This is what is left this morning after the boxes and boxes I bought last November.
- We've been getting about five eggs a day from the hens. It's a step in the right direction and I'm back to not buying eggs.
- I can tell I'm in complete retreat from the world mode because I have read 21 books so far this year. That's a lot even by my heavy reading standards.
- With wheat berries on hand, Y. is going to go back to making bread for us. I'm looking forward to it.
- And finally, I'll leave you with a funny picture of Nefertiti that I. took.
