Holiday doings

We seem to have squeezed in a whole lot of holiday activities over the weekend. On Friday, we went to get our tree. Between the drive to Wisconsin last Monday and my drive to Iowa yesterday, we didn't feel quite up for another long drive to our regular tree cutting place. (Plus, while R. slept the night before Thanksgiving, she hasn't slept since and J. and I are increasingly running on fumes.) So we decided to try a different tree place that was significantly closer to us. The best thing I can say about it is that we didn't pay a lot for the tree. We did end up with a tree, a much smaller tree than we are used to, but everyone agreed that we didn't want to try to go somewhere else. We didn't even take any pictures of the process this year. Now we know that our usual place is well worth the drive, so we'll plan better next year. But the tree is bought and sitting on our front porch ready to be decorated next weekend.

Christmas music is out and has been on nearly every waking moment. When you only listen to it for one month each year, you need to make the most of it. Does anyone have a Christmas album that they love? I'm feeling the need to add a new one (or two) this year. Y. also put away the fall picture books and got out the Christmas ones.

While I was in Iowa yesterday, Y. decided to bake some gingerbread cookies and I came home to everyone decorating them. I love that.

This morning we made and Advent candle centerpiece at church.

Of course, when Advent begins three days after Thanksgiving, there is a brief holiday mash-up until I fully switch from Thanksgiving to Advent.

I also canned 10-1/2 quarts of turkey broth today. Once again, it's not Christmas or Advent, but is definitely helping to finish up Thanksgiving. That took care of the bones for one turkey. There is still one turkey left that needs to go in the roaster for another batch of broth. I definitely cannot freeze it this year because the freezer has no room. I like the pressure canned version better, even if it is more work, because I don't have to plan ahead to thaw it in order to use it.

So those are our holiday doings so far. It's back to school and an usual schedule tomorrow. Hopefully sleeping will be part of the usual schedule.

I've always loved Peter, Paul, and Mary's A Holiday Celebration. I've listened to it on repeat while singing very loudly for decades worth of Decembers.

My favorite Christmas album is All I Want by Aliqua, I can listen to it on repeat all Christmas season. They have an interesting take on familiar songs along with some more unique songs.
