Evening of the Arts

Our co-op's end of the year program is called The Evening of the Arts. The co-op is not academics-focused, but enrichment, with a lot of different types of fine arts and supplemental-type classes. This is a chance to demonstrate everything that has been learned throughout the year.

Since not every class lends itself to a performance, the first half of the evening is a chance to walk around and look at displays from various classes. Two of the classes I taught fell into this category. My Creative Collaboration class displayed the board game they had created from scratch during the second semester.

My Creative Writing class also had a table. Each student had written and polished at least one final piece of writing which I put together into a chap book for each student. I need to figure out a more interesting display for next year. Copies of everyone's writing do not catch the interest of passers-by even though they each represent hours of work.

The art class had a large display of student art work. Here are a few of the things the K., H., and Y. drew. (There were too many people to get the other items they had displayed, and then I never got back to it.)

The art teacher held an art contest during the last week of classes and presented the awards tonight. H. won a ribbon!

My Memory Palaces class did a presentation during the performance part of the program. They first listed the presidents in order from memory, then I explained what memory palaces were and how they work, then I took numbers from the audience and the class told both what president that was and where that president had been "stored" in their memory palace.

Two of R.'s classes also did performances. She was in a young child music class and a young child movement class. She adored both of them and has been looking forward to this evening for weeks.

At one point R. was so excited about going up on stage that she tried to join another class. J. had to run up to the front and move her off the stage.

It was a good evening, but I'm looking forward to a break. I am now going to watch some silly television and go to bed.
