Book problems
With D. having worked at our library for all of last year, I have finally gotten to know some of the librarians there. This makes me happy. I like being recognized when I walk into the library; it's what I'm used to. It is truly one of those things which makes this place feel more like home.
This evening I was running in to the library because there were some books on hold that I wanted to pick up. I went to the shelf to grab the books and noticed there were a couple in the stack that I wasn't expecting. It was confusing because not only was I not expecting them, but they were books we actually owned. "Who the heck put these on hold since we already own them?" was the question that jumped to mind. Oh well, I decided to check them out and sort it all out later. I scanned my card and opened the first book of the surprise books to check it out and looked for the bar code. Funny, the bar code was scratched out. "That's odd," I thought. I looked at the book more closely. Inside the front cover is a library stamp which says, "south branch". I looked closer. South branch as in Evanston Public Library. And the bar code isn't just crossed out, it has W/D written across it to indicate it was withdrawn. Just like our copy...
I looked at the other book that looks just like ours...
And slowly it dawned on me that they look just like our copies because they are our copies. Yesterday there were books on hold (actually, there are always books on hold if I'm truthful), so decided to take everyone with me because they were needing more books. Because there seemed to be about one thousand library books kicking around the house, we did a huge sweep and gathered most of them up to return before bringing home more. We probably returned over eighty books. Since Y. has been working on birds for her individual project, she must have accidentally scooped up two of our books along with all the library books.
Now, the plus side of returning eighty-plus books is that when two non-library books come through with all of them it is pretty easy to figure out to whom they belong. So some nice librarian added them to our holds so we could get them. Which we did after my not-so-brief moment of confusion.
I was explaining all of this to the head librarian as we were chatting and she laughed and said that we were the libraries best customers. A statement which just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and still makes me smile when I remember it.
