Ancient Greece Lesson Plan

Here is my next lesson plan installment. This time Ancient Greece. As before, I will note topics covered, which if no resources are given, assume that I read the corresponding pages in the main texts we used. To document our learning, we created lapbooks, making the individual booklets as we went along, putting it all together at the end. I will also note what subjects we made booklets about.

Our main resources were:


#1 Introduction to the Greek world -- How we know about it -- Why we study it

        - Added Minoa to timeline
        - Made a booklet about bull jumping

        - Passed out copies of the Greek Alphabet and had them write them names on cards for lapbook

        - Made a Venn diagram of Athens and Sparta

#7 Greek City-States
        - Added City-States onto timeline

#8 Life in the City
        - Read Inside An Ancient Greek Town by Jonathan Rutland

#9 Pottery
        - Made an played Knucklebones

#10 Ships and Trade
        - Using a blank map, showed trade routes
        - Created a trireme diagram for lapbooks

#11 Triremes
        - Drew Greek Triremes

#12 Mythology
        - Created small books for each major Greek god

#13 Persia
        - Labeled map for Ancient Persia

#14 The Battle of Marathon
        - Added date to timeline
        - Began tri-fold book on the major battles of the Persian Wars

#15 The Battle of Thermophylae
        - Added to booklet

#16 The Battle of Salamis
        - Added to booklet
        - Read pp. 8 -14 of The Classical Companion

#17 Government
        - Made a booklet about Athenian government 

#18 Philosophy
        - Watched "What is Philosophy?" from Crash Course Philosophy #1

#19 Famous Philosophers and Scientists
        - Made booklet about 12 major thinkers

#20 Archimedes
        - Read (portions) Archimedes: Innovative Mathematician, Engineer, and Inventor by Viola Jones and Heather Hasan
        - Added Archimedes' dates to timeline

#21 Socrates and Aristotle

#22 Plato
        - Watched Plato's Allegory of the Cave by Alex Gendler on TedEd)
        - Read the Allegory of the Cave excerpt from Republic

#23 Athens
        - Read Story of Buildings (about Parthenon) by Patrick Dillon and Steve Biesty
        - Made a pop-up Parthenon
        - Watched NOVA: Secrets of the Parthenon and Lost Treasures of the Ancient World: Ancient Greece

#24 Greek Columns
        - Did experiment on column strength
        - Art project using Greek columns

#25 Theater
        - Watched Oedipus Rex: The Short Version

#26 Olympics
        - Read Eyewitness Olympics
        - Made booklet on Greek Olympic games

#27 The Peloponnesian Wars
        - Watched An Introduction to Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian Wars

#28 Alexander the Great
        - Added dates to timeline
        - Made booklet on Alexander for lapbooks


At the end of our study, one day was spend putting together the lapbooks.

Chapter books we read:
The Winged Girl of Knossos by Erick Berry (highly recommended... even if you are not studying Ancient Greece)
The Children's Homer by Padriac Colum
Theras and His Town by Caroline Dale Snedeker (the children enjoyed it, I found it trying)
Marathon Looks on the Sea by Olivia E. Coolidge (this was a slog)
