It's all in the spin

It's getting towards the end of the school year, which always feels as though it is a monumental effort to keep going, especially as the weather starts to warm up. You know, like is supposed to happen in spring instead of waking up to 28 degrees and quite a bit of snow on the ground. I feel as though perhaps we've entered a version of the movie, Groundhog Day, and we just get to repeat February and March over and over and over again. And then when you combine that with day 390,233 of staying at home.... Well, let's just say being super diligent with school is not really at the top of my list of things I feel up to doing.

But maybe I should have prefaced this post by saying that I realize that my younger children, being grades 5-7, are probably ready to begin taking some ownership for their own learning. Middle school is about the time I start the process of off-loading developing responsibility for their own education. This seemed like a good thing to start. So, I went through my schedule and figured out what they needed to complete in order to call the school year done in terms of math, grammar, and writing. I told them what they needed to do, told them that they would need to create a sign-off sheet for each assignment that I would initial after they showed me their work, and when it was all signed-off, they would be done with school for the year. I will still work with them in the mornings to finish our two unit studies we are working on as well as the video lessons from their co-op teachers. The idea of being able to finish in the next few weeks with diligent work was appealing to everyone, so they embraced the idea heartily. For my part, I can have our unit studies done pretty darn quickly, as we were pretty close to finishing.

This afternoon, not really wanting to spend time outside in the winter weather, I decided it would be a good day to catch-up on some ironing that had been accumulating for the past few months. This sounds responsible and productive, but really it was an excuse to binge watch season 1 of The Great British Baking Show. This is what I've descended to. I still have some ironing to do (mainly large pieces of fabric that I got from various sources that I washed and now needs to be ironed before I can use it), and we still have the entire first season of Star Trek: Next Generation.

Really, I'm feeling a little stir-crazy. If it would warm up, I could occupy myself with outside tasks. There's certainly enough of them. Or I could just sit and read in the sun. I wouldn't complain about that, either. But this winter business on top of not being able to go anywhere. It doesn't help that I missed my annual visit-my-mom-and-warm-up-in-Arizona-trip last month.

And we're due to get more snow on Friday.

Bah.
