Angles and ducks
It's an odd title, I realize. At first glance it looks as though I might be writing about ancient British tribes... you know, the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. But since as far as I know there was not a tribe called the Ducks, so no ancient British history today.
No, the title is merely because that is what I have pictures of to share with you. First the angles (lower case 'a'). It's been an odd two months due to weather and what not, and the schedule for school was not followed quite exactly. Yesterday morning I spent some time figuring out exactly how I would make what was planned fit into the rest of the school year. I'm happy to report I managed it and we will still be done by mid-May. This week we have spent a lot of time learning about angles, the mathematical type.
First we read this book
This is one of those rare series where it teaches something but is still an entertaining story. So many of this type of book suffer from overt didacticism and my children have wanted nothing to do with them. They can smell dry instructional material clothed in supposed fun a mile away. This series is one they enjoy, and it really does do a good job of teaching mathematical concepts.
After the story every drew their own angles and labeled them.
Then everyone finally got to take out their protractors which I had given them at the beginning of the year and we learned how to measure angles. To make it more fun, everyone put some strips of washi tape on their papers and then we measured the angles which resulted.
We also got to see how opposite angles are the same degree and how supplementary angles equal 180 degrees.
Today we made inclinometers which we will use outside (hopefully) next week.
Now to the ducks. Ducklings are messy and ducklings are smelly and ducklings are loud and ducklings grow exceedingly fast. All day long we hear loud PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP-PEEP, well, you get the idea. This extreme peeping happens whenever the ducklings are out of food or out of water, which is approximately every 20 minutes. We will be quite happy when they can move outside.
But the upside to having ducklings in the house is that now they are two weeks old, they can go swimming in the bathtub. There is very little that is cuter than a bathtub full of ducklings enjoying a nice little swim.
It is so cute it almost makes up for the stinky, messy, loudness. Almost.
