Public Service Announcement
It seems there is a new homeschooling group around that people need to be aware of.... even if you are not a homeschooler. And that would be you need to know about it and not in a good way. I'm not going to link to it. If you want to do your own research, Google can find it for you. And I'm all about doing your own research.
So this particular group is The Homeschool Freedom Directory. It wants to gather a list of businesses and professionals who are willing to sign their pledge to get on their list. Which you then pay a fee for them to do direct marketing to their audience. The website uses phrases such as "connecting homeschoolers with businesses who support their values" and "wanting to bring the homeschool community together and make it stronger."
There seemed to be a few code words in there, so I looked at the pledge. First, it is very faith based. Clue number one that these weren't my people. And if you haven't been around the blog for very long, I need to point out that I am a Christian, but I very much dislike Christianity being used as an exclusionary device because that is pretty much anti-Christian. Believe it or not, not every homeschooler is a Christian and I happen to think they deserve homeschooling freedoms, too.
The next item I can get behind, parents should have the option to educate their children how they seem fit. But as I was telling J. the other day, current events have me clinging to that belief by my fingernails because... well, organizations like this. I'm not sure how long I can hold on. The next item will help explain way. (Well, there are lots of reasons, but this next item is a big one.)
And then further down the list was the item I was waiting for, not surprised when I saw it, and caused me to sigh deeply. That would be the right for homeschoolers to not be compelled to send their child to any school to which they are conscientiously opposed.
Excuse me while I take a couple of deep breaths.
Okay.
First point, no one is currently being completed to send their child anywhere they don't want to. This is fear mongering plain and simple. And you all know how I feel about fear mongering. But really, this is just code for parents don't want their children exposed to the LGBT+ community. They don't want their children exposed to my (homeschooled) children. That's the long and the short of it.
I won't expound on that here, as I have already done so more than a few times.
( A couple are: Another episode of very unpopular opinions and A parent's worst nightmare )
One last thing, the executive director of this organization (and it is not difficult to suss out someone's political views) is so very MAGA it makes my head swim. I wasn't surprised because the coding on the website all but has a golden statue of Felon47 on it, but if you are really so gung ho about our current president why don't you say so? What could you possibly be ashamed of? (Yes, read that last question absolutely dripping with sarcasm.)
To review:
- The Homeschool Freedom Directory is a Christian Nationalist vehicle designed to support racist and homophobic businesses and drive money to them by advertising them to their racist and homophobic followers.
- Do not agree to sign their pledge or use their marketing.
- If you happen to see a business or professional that has signed their pledge, do not give them your business.
