Underappreciated books

Tonight was our church's monthly inclusive game night, so I don't have much energy left to write much of anything. I thought instead that I would go back through some of my reading lists and suggest books I don't here recommended very often. This is possibly because they are older, but that just means it should be easy to find at the library. So if you're looking for interesting books, here you go.

Possession by A. S. Byatt
This is in my top five favorite books. It's a dual timeline (from when that was unique) literary mystery.

Provenance: How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art by Laney Salisbury and Aly Suki
This is narrative non-fiction that would be almost unbelievable if it was fiction.

Pompeii by Robert Harris
Actually anything by Robert Harris if you enjoy historical fiction... really well done historical fiction. I was on the edge of my seat reading this even though I know the volcano erupts.

The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson
This was a book I didn't expect to love, but ended up being so sad to have it end. It's historical fiction about Viking raiders which was immensely entertaining.

Ella Minnow Pea: a novel in letters by Mark Dunn
This is an epistolary novel about an island where the use of specific alphabet letters are increasingly forbidden. The catch is as Ella writes her correspondence, she cannot use those letters. It could have been a book that was nothing more than a literary parlour trick, but instead has important things to say about the rise of authoritarianism.

A Rising Man by Abir Mukherjee
The first of a series of mysteries set at the end of the raj in India and the time of Gandhi. It is a very well done series which also tackles English colonialism.

The City & the City by China MiƩville
A truly unique mystery set in a place where two distinct cities sit in the same place. I still think about this three years later.

There you go. Books that I think should be talked about more. Happy reading!
