Personal quirks

I don't know about you, but I need something a little lighter tonight. So let's play the first installment of...

Am I the Only One?!

The game show where I learn whether I am somewhat normal or if I truly do have a runaway imagination.

I'll list three actual, real life occurrences for me and you tell me in the comments if you do this, too.

1. I seen to be an optimistic and a cynic all at the same time. My optimistic side comes out every time I go collect the mail from the mail box. There is always a little fizzle of anticipation because you never know if this will be the day when I open the box to discover a letter with a large check for us inside. In reality, 99.9% of the time there is no mysterious envelope with a large check. But every once in a while (think decades here), there actually is a surprise check, so you just never know.

2. Along those same lines, whenever I'm in the vestibule where the cost closets are I always am sure to look through the front door window to the porch and doormat. Because you just never know if someone will abandon a box full of puppies or kittens on your doorstep. This has never happened, but I'd hate to miss them if they're there. I'm both relieved and disappointed to not find a box.

3. When life gets too busy and stressful, I find myself imagining some mildly concerning yet manageable medical condition which would require me to stay in the hospital for a week. While I haven't had this daydream recently, it appeared somewhat frequently when I had a houseful of toddlers through teens. It was always a signal that I was trying to do too much.

There you go... weird and quirky things about my rather active imagination. What about you?

I think I must be more of a pessimist than you. I never expect large checks, nor do I expect puppies and kittens.

However, we did find an abandoned kitten that was near death in front of our house. We had to immediately spend $2,000 on her to keep her alive. She's 5 now.

The sad part of this story is that several neighbors later told me they'd seen her and another kitten running around together for a few days. They didn't do anything about it, and we've never seen that other kitten. I assume it was even more sickly and didn't make it.

But the third fantasy... I have spent the past two decades day dreaming about living in the early part of the 1900s, having a mild case of TB, and being sent by my family to spend time recuperating at a sanitarium in the Berkshires. You know, those fantasy ones for the wealthy where you spend your days outside on a lounger with a blanket, breathing in the clear air. And the staff take pains to not stress you out! So, I totally get you on this one.
