All the Olympics, all the time

We don't watch much television here and have cancelled all of our streaming services due to either political ideology or lack of use. That meant in order to watch the Olympics, we needed to get a month's service. I think we will be getting our money's worth, certainly more than three movie's worth. Yes, we still think in terms of how many movies from Blockbuster the cost would be. We are not young. All day today various children have paused to turn on the television and watch some of the Olympics. Y. was a little disappointed that curling wasn't as exciting as she had imagined it to be. Unsurprisingly, the curling team from Great Britain is dominating. If you were curious.

And of course last night we all watched the Opening Ceremonies together. We'd had pasta for dinner and an Italian jam tart (compliments of G.) for dessert in honor of the host country.

Parts of the ceremonies I enjoyed. Listening to Andrea Bocelli singing an aria by Puccini was definitely the highlight. I almost feel a little badly for Milan because the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony was so amazing it would be difficult to come next. I couldn't help thinking that there was a huge opportunity missed. Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest minds in history spent much of his career working in Milan for the Duke of Milan. While in the Duke's employ, da Vinci would put on elaborate spectacles to entertain the Duke and his guests. What we know of them was that they were inventive, overwhelming, and employed great creativeness both in terms of content and the mechanics da Vinci designed to make them work. I would have loved to see more of a story told employing this Milanese history. I could imagine da Vinci coming back to Milan to create a spectacle for the Olympic games. I'd rather always having a story to tie everything together.

There will be a lot of Olympic viewing over the next weeks. I do love the excellence and drama and excitement of it all. But does anyone feel as slug-like as I do after watching? For instance I caught some cross-country skiing this afternoon. I'm hardly sedentary, but I can't imagine being able to complete the circuit they were doing once much less four times!
