The week has ended far better than it began, even if it is getting colder and colder outside.
  • I have come up with a possible reason for R.'s latest week long trauma extravaganza. As I mentioned we are upping some of her seizure meds. Well, what if this is another example of forced normalcy? (Forced normalcy is where something that had caused the brain to not function well, for instance seizures, is mitigated somewhat. As a result, there is more access to thinking and remembering, often resulting in harder behaviors as these things are brought to the surface.) If the meds are working, she might be remembering things that hadn't been accessible before. This would explain the nightmares which were the first indication that something was off. I may be totally making this up, but for whatever reason, having some sort of explanation has made it possible to regain my own equilibrium a bit.
  • We also ended the school week on a good note. As you might remember, Tuesday wasn't particularly wonderful on that front. Yesterday, chemistry involved M&M's and dilution experiments. Of course, not all the M&M's were used, so that was fun. Then, I realized that I had planned in a week off of school when I was doing all that planning in the summer. I had completely forgotten about it. So, everyone, including me, was pretty darn excited about a week's vacation after next week. Finally, we did a lot of fun projects today. First, we did some playing around with the concept of post and lintel buildings and why they are so stable.

And then we had an art project that used what we hard learned about the different type of Greek columns.

You can see it was a slightly better day with R. since she was able to join us for our project. This one she did with very little help. I also realized that if she were actually a toddler that I would be handing her paper, scissors, and glue to play with a lot more often than I do. As I watched her trying to use the bottle of glue, I realized that I need to be more purposeful about that.

I was pretty impressed with everyone's drawings of Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns.

This is Y.'s,

and a better picture of K's (above) and L.'s.
  • We spend some time decorating for Tet/Chinese New Year today.

  • TM, R., and I also headed over to the new (to us) Asian market that TM found. I bought some supplies to make dumplings next week as well as getting some other things I can't find anywhere else. And then I made an impulse buy and purchased this amazingly huge wok.
I love it!

And in case you couldn't quite tell exactly how large it is, here is it on my stove with a bottle next to it for size comparison. I haven't been this excited about cookware since the last time I bought a giant frying pan. This is even bigger and since the sides are higher, it can hold more.
  • I finished reading Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist by Eli Saslow this past week. It was an interesting book, though not always easy to read. If you have ever wondered how to relate to people who hold what you find to be abhorrent views, I suggest you read this. A good part of the book discusses this very thing. Highly recommended.
  • We have a lot of snow and it is looking very pretty outside.
That's my side garden and drive you are looking at there. It's not immediately obvious.
  • We may have a foot of snow on the ground, but one of my projects for this weekend is to sort through my seeds and figure out what I need for the garden this year. I heard on the radio that seed suppliers are having difficulty keeping enough stock, so hopefully I can still get what I need. I do still have quite a bit left from past years, to I'm not feeling terribly panicked. Yet.
  • I now have an official letter from our doctor which says I am a caregiver for a person with a qualifying disability, so, in theory, should be able to get the vaccine when I find an opening. The key words being when I find an opening.
  • Because R. was having a hard week, we decided to postpone her appointment for having the wire removed from her front teeth. It just seemed like the wisest course of action.
  • G. loves to listen to audio books. She has one going a significant portion of the time. Currently any of the Rick Riordan books are her favorites and she has listened to them so many times that now she just grabs a disc at random and listens to it. This means that J. and I have no clear idea of how the books fit together never having heard them in order. I also feel as though I have heard some chapters approximately 392,390 times with no idea of what came before or what comes after.
And with that I shall finish since I need to go say good-night to people. Stay warm this weekend! (And if you aren't in an area that is ridiculously cold, just keep it to yourself. Those of us in three layers of clothing don't really want to hear about it right now.)
