Creative week at the Big Ugly House

My parents are in town all week which means 1) to not expect any posts of deep insight, I'm on vacation 2) we'll be having lots and lots of fun and 3) there will probably be lots of creating going on because my mom kind of inspires that sort of activity. So, why try to interfere with a force of nature? It's much easier just to go along with it.

For day one of Creative Week, then, I'm going to share M.'s latest creations. These are what she has been working on pretty much non-stop for the past two weeks. Through a contact in the Chicago theater world, she was asked to create life size dinosaur puppets/costumes for a small stage production of Jurassic Park. It being the theater world, she did it out of the goodness of her heart (and for the contacts and 'intern' line on her resume). I'm really impressed with what she created merely out of foam core, duct tape, milk jugs, cardboard, and one lone sock.

Here are a few of the many dinos she created. (B. is modeling.)

The T-Rex. His mouth opens and closes using two handles on the inside.

And the baby velociraptor. He is a puppet and completely movable and also has an egg which he hatches out of. Who knew you could make a baby velociraptor out of milk jugs, duct tape, and a old sock?

I wish I could answer your question! The T-Rex was made by my oldest and even though I've watched the process, it still baffles me. I do know it was made out of cardboard. The two halves were hinged together so that the handles that are inside the head can make the mouth move. The same stage version of Jurassic Park was mounted a second time, with new and improved dinosaurs, which are much more complicated and I can't even begin to describe how the velociraptors for that were made, but you can see pictures here: http://ordinary-time.blogspot.com/2013/07/dinosaur-puppets.html

An uncomfortable post

I hope it comes as no surprise to my readers that when I vote early next week I will be casting my ballot for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Being in a blue state this feels as though it is a very little thing in the effort to bring our country back past the brink of no return . I'll be honest and say that I am feeling such stress and fear about this election that I can't listen to any news or look at social media for very long. The radio is pretty firmly set on our classical music station even though they are in the middle of a pledge drive. The pledge drive is preferable.  But for those of you who are supporting the other side, if there are any of you left who continue to visit my blog, here is what I need to say. Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway

Sew, Mama, Sew! is hosting another giveaway day , the day where many bloggers giveaway things they have made or supplies to make things or both.  It is great fun to visit a lot of blogs and try to win cool stuff.  So fun that I thought I would participate this year. I had great hopes of making a set of coordinating mother/daughter aprons.  But reality reared its ugly head and I came to terms with the fact that my time is not limitless.Instead of aprons,  I must continue to spend quality time with yards and yards of red plaid flannel.  What am I making?  Well, as I tell my children, it is the season not to ask questions...
