Weekly update - July 5, 2025

This may be heavily animal themed.
  • Let's talk about whippoorwills. It's a bird previous to last weekend that I had only read about. I imagined that the little whippoorwill song that they sang was sweet and charming. Well, it seems I was mistaken. Their song is the bird equivalent of someone typing in all caps. Instead of whippoorwill, whippoorwill, it's actually WHIPPOORWILL!! WHIPPOORWILL!! at the bright and early hour of 4:30 am. 
  • G. is doing a fantastic job with the new lambs. This one is Caspian.

  • Fred wanted his picture taken, too.
  • It turns out that sheep love mulberry leaves. Fred and Clark have both become very good at balancing on their hind legs to reach them. 
  • And some lamb pictures, because they're cute.
  • The chicks are getting bigger and their feet are getting feathery-er.

  • There is a huge squash plant growing in the sheep pen. I didn't plant it. The seed must have been dropped or buried by some passing animal. It is the healthiest squash plant that we've ever had. The sheep don't like the slightly prickly nature of the leaves, so have been leaving them alone. There are even quite a few squash growing.

  • W. has quite a few aquariums and so has a collection of aquatic plants which need to be thinned regularly. So he brought some over for the pond. The plants are doing very well. If you look closely, you will see four different types. Most importantly, though, is that Duck liked them. 

  • J. had to get a new cell phone today. It's what happens when you're mowing, it falls out of your pocket, and you don't realize it until it's in flaming shreds.
  • Here is Fluffy, on his early evening perch on the medicine chest. J., at night check in the barn, then moves Fluffy to a saw horse we have set up for him. 
  • And a couple of horse pictures because it's been a while.

Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway

Sew, Mama, Sew! is hosting another giveaway day , the day where many bloggers giveaway things they have made or supplies to make things or both.  It is great fun to visit a lot of blogs and try to win cool stuff.  So fun that I thought I would participate this year. I had great hopes of making a set of coordinating mother/daughter aprons.  But reality reared its ugly head and I came to terms with the fact that my time is not limitless.Instead of aprons,  I must continue to spend quality time with yards and yards of red plaid flannel.  What am I making?  Well, as I tell my children, it is the season not to ask questions... I will be able to let you know sometime after the 25th. Instead of making something, I went to my favorite thrift store and found some supplies in the form of sheets and pillowcases (some of my favorite raw material).  I'm giving away three pillowcases and one twin flat sheet. A little adoption history and pontificating

A little distance is always good before writing on a tough subject. I think I can tackle this rationally now, though I may step on a few toes. We'll see. As some of you may know, yesterday the State department issued a notice saying that China, as of the end of August, has closed their intercountry adoption program. This is across the board and regardless of whether a family has been matched with a child or not. This has been exceedingly hard news for the Chinese adoption community.  I think I need to fill you in on some background before I continue because I realize not everyone lives in this world. (This is an extremely cursory and very simplified history.) China began allowing intercounty adoptions in 1992. Since that time, more than 160,000 children (most were girls) were adopted around the world; ~82,000 of those children came to the US. The process was centralized and a fairly predictable process.
