Weekly update - April 14, 2023

I'm not even really sure what all happened this week. I'll see what I can remember.
  • The weather has been amazing. It's been pretty much summer for the past few days. Everything has budded out and greened up. The peonies are even up. At this rate they will all bloom in May and not June. It's also a little odd. But there's snow in the forecast on Monday, so we're not quite to actual summer 
  • The horses who have not completely shed their winter coats all seem rather sweaty. 
  • The garden bed cleaning continues. There are only two out of twelve vegetable beds that need to be weeded now. My children have worked hard and been fantastically helpful.
  • I finally had a moment this week to do some gardening. With H. and R.'s help we nearly have the long flower garden that runs the whole length of the house cleaned up. It's off because usually I get things trimmed before the bulbs really start coming up, but it's been so warm they are all up and blooming. I hadn't seen the fritillary yet, so was concerned it didn't survive the winter. Then, when I cut back some dried ornamental grass, I found it! And it has twice as many blooms this year.
  • I have a lot of hay in the barn again. I'm hoping this lasts me through summer.
  • G. and L. are having a sleepover at W.'s and MC's tonight.
  • P. is away grooming at another horse show this week so Midnight is back with us. He is not pleased about it.
  • The chickens, ducks, and goose are all back to egg laying. I am thrilled to not have to buy eggs at the store. K. is thrilled that we have goose eggs again because he loves them.
  • We will be back to doing school next week. This is the home stretch. The plan is to finish mid-May.
  • We had our co-op open house today to show people what classes are available. I'll be teaching Sheep to Scarf again and adding a second level to it, Knitting, and a class called Lost in a Good Book. This is a survey of different novels, their place in history and geography, some about the author, and a synopsis. Then I will spend the rest of the class reading out loud from each book. Really, it's just an excuse to read good books out loud.
  • I have had very little time to work on any fiber related things this week. Well, plus it's been so nice all I have wanted to do is sit and read outside, so I can't completely blame the busier than usual week.

Making bias tape... otherwise known as the Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway

It's Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway time again.  I love bias tape.  It is so useful and so easy to use... finishing edges ... finishing seams ...  And while the pre-packaged stuff has it's place and I use it often, I really like to have patterned bias tape as well.  Enter one of my favorite little tools: the bias tape maker.  This one make 3/4 inch bias tape and I will be giving one away at the end of this post.  But first, I thought some of you might like to see what it does if you've never used one before. I don't have a rotary cutter, nice cutting mats, or even a proper cutting table (I cut-out things on my floor), so if I can do this, so can you.  Here is my admittedly quirky method. Step 1:  Lay out the fabric and fold a corner over to find the bias.  The woven threads should be at right angles to the part you turned up. Step 2:  Using a ruler and some sort of mark

Apple picking in the rain

Today was our planned day to go and pick apples.  It was raining off and on, but when it comes to fruit, we don't let a little water get in our way so off we went.  We met our friends and enjoyed their company and picked a lot of apples (3 1/2 bushels).  We also ate quite a few. G.  L. K.  (with an apple nearly as big as his head) P8, TM and L. Now, I don't know about you, but even picking 7 bags of apples does not take us very long.  It's a shame to drive so far only to turn around and go home, so we packed lunches, headed to a park, and enjoyed the now sunny weather. TM and P8 A good day all around.  Of course now I have to do something with all these apples...

Kenzie on the beach

We have made it back home. I am feeling a little more balanced, but it was hard saying goodbye to a house we've created such meaningful memories in for the past 34 years.
