Friday bullets - May 20, 2022
I haven't done this in a while it seems.
- The garden is closer to being all planted. Today I finished adding compost to two more garden beds and got them planted. In now are sweet and hot peppers, sweet basil. and yellow pear tomatoes. These were the last of the seedlings which needed to go in. As far as seeds, I planted snap peas, arugula, beets, cantaloupe, pie pumpkins, and bush beans. Here is the bed with the yellow pear tomatoes and hot peppers.
- I have so much compost. It is composted horse manure that has been cooking for over a year. It is good stuff. Contact me if you want to come and get some. I will use up a good portion with three more garden beds to get ready plus I'll probably top dress as many of the other garden areas as possible, but it's a lot.
- You can tell it's spring because L. has started catching snakes again. This was a little tiny baby snake.
- D. heads back to school on Sunday to do summer research. It has been great having him home and we will miss him.
- P. is frustrated by trying to find an apartment that both she can afford and that will also take one cat. She can find one or the other but not both.
- J.'s school is holding commencement tomorrow. This means that he will soon be on his summer schedule of working Monday through Thursday with Fridays off. I can't wait.
- The baby chickens moved outside today into the pen we had set up for them. They will stay there until they are big enough to hold their own against the other chickens. They had definitely reached teenage chicken-hood and were no longer welcome inside the house. H. and R. are very relieved to have them out of their room. Baby chicks are cute and fun to have around, teenage chickens, not so much.
- So far, so good as far as the summer plan. No complaining and everyone has been doing the three items they are to do without any badgering on my part.
- The discussion of Jane Eyre continues. We have finally reached the part in The Eyre Affair where the characters are inside the Jane Eyre story. Dinner consisted of more rehashing of the St. John Rivers character.
- I think I have made a trip to the library every day this week but one. This is what happens when everyone (including myself) keeps putting books on hold and they NEED the book which has jusr arrived.
- Have you ever seen green onions going to seed?
- For fun I'll also show you what horseradish looks like in bloom.
I will probably not collect these seeds. It is a large horseradish plant (which we moved from Evanston) and there is only so much horseradish anyone needs at any given time.
- The horses have nearly all shed their winter coats now. Last week's 90 degree temperatures was tough for them since they were still all a little shaggy.
- Because of last week's heat, it feels as though all the flowering plants are ahead of schedule by a couple of weeks.
- Y. has made it her mission to tame the guinea pig. You might remember that at some point TM came home with a baby guinea pig because his original owner couldn't keep him. TM named him Delta. Delta has kind of by default become K.'s guinea pig since Delta lives in K.'s room. Y. has done a great job with Delta and every so often you will find her walking around with a guinea pig in her arms. They are such funny, potato-shaped creatures.
- We haven't seen many frogs in the pond yet.
- G. made a lemon meringue pie yesterday. She is really pretty darn good at them now.
- For a very long time (months and months and months), G. and L. have been saving up to buy themselves a Switch. Well, a couple of weeks ago, they finally had enough saved, so I took them to the store to buy it.
- Enjoy that long hair on each of them, because they have decided they are weary of if and want hair cuts. Next week I have appointments for them at my hair stylist for them to get new haircuts. They have both picked super short styles. I'm sure it will be cute, but I'll admit I'll probably inwardly taking many deep, calming breaths.
And with that, I'm going to call it a night. I have books to read.
