Children who make things

Now that it's August, everyone seems to have found their summer rhythm. There has been much game playing, book reading, bicycle riding, cooking, taking out dogs, painting, drawing, and making. At least once or twice a day, I am asked by a child to put a book on hold for them at the library. (We currently have well over 100 books checked out at the moment. Have I mentioned how much I adore the fact that this library doesn't have a book limit?) Every so often someone will wander through the house mentioning that they are bored, but I express sympathy, go back to what I was doing, and they sort it out. It's all rather lovely, especially since every so often someone will wander into the kitchen and either unload or load the dishwasher. I adore that, too.

K. has been especially productive over the past couple of days making things (more things, more Star Wars things) with cardboard. Here are his latest creations.

K. made two helmets, this is the first one. I have no idea what kind of soldier this helmet belongs to, though I'm sure K. told me.


This is the second helmet. No, I don't know what this one is, either. I particularly like the painting he did on it.


This is a little droid. It is a D-0 droid. (K. told me and I remembered this.) I love how he can stand on his round wheel.

This is an R-2 droid. I know R-2 because it is from one of the few Star Wars movies I've seen.

Saturday, G. spent the afternoon making a name sign for Flavia's new house.

And a closer view. I love how she made the vine going around it. This was totally her idea and design.

This is such a treat! You’ve got a visionary artist in residence! That is one of the very best things about kids: seeing what they come up with out of their imaginations. Kiddos with a unique history (and less mindless screen time) have powerful imaginations. We are going to need that!

Making bias tape... otherwise known as the Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway

It's Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway time again.  I love bias tape.  It is so useful and so easy to use... finishing edges ... finishing seams ...  And while the pre-packaged stuff has it's place and I use it often, I really like to have patterned bias tape as well.  Enter one of my favorite little tools: the bias tape maker.  This one make 3/4 inch bias tape and I will be giving one away at the end of this post.  But first, I thought some of you might like to see what it does if you've never used one before. I don't have a rotary cutter, nice cutting mats, or even a proper cutting table (I cut-out things on my floor), so if I can do this, so can you.  Here is my admittedly quirky method. Apple picking in the rain

Today was our planned day to go and pick apples.  It was raining off and on, but when it comes to fruit, we don't let a little water get in our way so off we went.  We met our friends and enjoyed their company and picked a lot of apples (3 1/2 bushels).  We also ate quite a few. G.  L. K.  (with an apple nearly as big as his head) P8, TM and L. Now, I don't know about you, but even picking 7 bags of apples does not take us very long.  It's a shame to drive so far only to turn around and go home, so we packed lunches, headed to a park, and enjoyed the now sunny weather. TM and P8 A good day all around.  Of course now I have to do something with all these apples...

Kenzie on the beach

We have made it back home. I am feeling a little more balanced, but it was hard saying goodbye to a house we've created such meaningful memories in for the past 34 years.
