Thursday Homeschool Resource Day -- Link up -- Landform cards

We are finishing up a unit on basic geography knowledge.  Instead of doing what the book suggested and do a workbook page, I decided to get the land form pans and land form cards out and have the children build geographical terms with clay.  I bought these cards from a Montessori catalogue ages and ages ago when M. was in kindergarten or first grade and when I went back to try to find the link to share with you, it seems they are not carried anymore.  Never fear!  I have something better.  In my searching I found a link to a free, printable version of nearly the same thing.  That's much better, huh? 

Not only do the children really get to see what the geographical features are in three dimensions, they get to play with clay and water (always a plus) and the cards really demonstrate how different geographical features of opposites of each other.  For instance, did you ever think about how a lake and an island are opposite?

Remember, I have some extra children this week while their mother acts as costume lady for Much Ado About Nothing.  (Plus, I don't have to drive A. to her tech rehearsals!)

I should clarify, if only because my braiding skills are not even close to my friend's, the mother of the P. family. P6, P7, and P9 are friends who are spending significant time with us this week. I will pass along the compliment to the one who has the mad braiding skills.

Maybe someday I will have to develop them myself... who knows?

Apple picking in the rain

Today was our planned day to go and pick apples.  It was raining off and on, but when it comes to fruit, we don't let a little water get in our way so off we went.  We met our friends and enjoyed their company and picked a lot of apples (3 1/2 bushels).  We also ate quite a few. G.  L. K.  (with an apple nearly as big as his head) P8, TM and L. Now, I don't know about you, but even picking 7 bags of apples does not take us very long.  It's a shame to drive so far only to turn around and go home, so we packed lunches, headed to a park, and enjoyed the now sunny weather. TM and P8 A good day all around.  Of course now I have to do something with all these apples...

Kenzie on the beach

We have made it back home. I am feeling a little more balanced, but it was hard saying goodbye to a house we've created such meaningful memories in for the past 34 years.
