Just to be clear
In case you aren't sure where I stand on a few things, I thought I would clarify. I am so angry at nearly every government representative right now I can barely think straight. It's really very simple.
All life matters.
If that life happens to be an immigrant child who crossed the border with a caregiver looking for a better life, that life matters. That life shouldn't be separated from loved ones, put into internment camps, abused, discarded, lost, or adopted into another home because no one can bother to reunite families.
If that life happens to have had a rough start causing untold trauma which results in extremely difficult behaviors, that life matters. Parents (adoptive and biological) should not be left hanging without help and support and understanding about what living with a child impacted by trauma looks like.
If that life happens to be a different color from someone, that life matters. The amount of melatonin in the skin should make no difference what so ever, yet it does. And when those of us with less melatonin hear stories and experiences of those with more, we do not get to decide how that makes someone else feel.
If that life happens to be inconvenient or unplanned or unwanted, that life matters. Someone may not want to raise that life, but there are certainly others who are waiting to do so.
If that life happens to find herself pregnant and scared and hopeless, that life matters. We need to love and support and care for both lives caught in a less-than-ideal situation.
If that life happens to see their identity as something different than we are comfortable with, that life matters. No, you may never understand why that person feels as they do, but not understanding is very, very different from treating with contempt or hatred or disdain.
If that life happens to have more physical or mental or intellectual challenges than most others, that life still matters. We get so caught up in what someone can do that we forget it is just as important to remember who someone is. Production is not really the end all and be all of life.
And finally, if that life, that little newborn life, happens to survive the first attempt to kill it, we should not ever have to say that it should be allowed to live. Being unwanted is not justification for murder. Heavens, if that's all it took, I'm afraid at one point or another in each of our lives we would all have cause to be dead.
See? Not so hard. Life, all life, regardless or color, nationality, religion, persuasion, income, age, place, wanted, or unwanted matters. In my opinion, right now both parties have a heck of a lot to answer for.
